The relationship between former president Donald Trump and Meta CEO Mark Zuckerberg has not been easy, as they have been at ideological war for some time now. Although there was animosity towards Trump, he was allied with other Tech leaders such as Elon Musk. The two, however, have never seen eye to eye since Zuckerberg’s company banned Trump from Facebook and Instagram. Trump had also threatened Zuckerberg regarding the upcoming elections. Following a recent dinner in Florida, it may hint toward improvement.

In the same breath, a Meta
representative also stated he was grateful for the opportunity to explain how
the country’s future sits on innovations powered by the new administration.
This is definitely not the first time such statements have been made since they were
also made early in this year. August saw Trump also announcing to
his followers that Zuckerberg was going to serve life in jail because of an election
involving interference. This went on to change as he later on said that the
former CEO expressed gratitude because he was supportive and stayed neutral
during the assassination attack attempting to end his life.

The relationship dynamics are
changing. Trump’s ban from Meta platforms was lifted in 2022 after being put in
place in 2021 when he was accused of making provocative statements during the
Capitol incident. Zuckerberg also expressed his regrets concerning allegations
related to Meta’s moderation of Hunter Biden’s content in the run-up to the
2020 elections. In addition, he explained the purpose of his $400 million
investment in the electoral infrastructure as that of supporting the system,
assuring that he will avoid involvement in the future to prevent controversies.

At the same time, Musk continues
to have favorable working relations with Trump. Their relations have enabled
them to raise more than $100 million in campaign financing and secured
endorsements from Musk as well as his campaign extremists. It’s these ties that
have led some to refer to him as the “First Buddy, ” suggesting he would have
great influence in Trump’s administration possibly in the proposed new
Department of Government Efficiency (Doge) where he could steer regulations that
would affect his investments.
Even with Trump’s friendship with
Musk, the two tech giants have bad blood. This conflict started in 2016 when a
SpaceX rocket exploded which took down a Facebook satellite. Their argument
grew to the extent that it morphed into an imaginary cage fight, which is
rather far-fetched in reality.
However, as the situation with
Trump, Musk, and Zuckerberg progresses, they will be working towards an
uncertain future within an ever-watchful and intrusive Big Tech. The regulatory
wars have already begun with the Federal Trade Commission’s antitrust case
against Meta for one.
As for the Mar-a-Lago dinner,
while its objectives are currently unknown, its meaning is crucial when looking
at the changing relationships of power in technology politics.
